Bonding with your baby fosters self esteem and a sense of security. It results in parents getting up during the middle of the night for feedings and diaper changes. Babies are typically ready to bond immediately following birth and the process of bonding will occur over time as you care for and love your baby. Here are some ways to start the bonding process.
Touch
Infants respond to the touch of their mothers. The act of cradling your child in your arms and holding him or her provides a soothing way to communicate with your child.
Breastfeed
Breastfeeding provides another opportunity for skin-to-skin contact. Breastfeeding is another great opportunity to bond with your baby, because it provides the ultimate feeling of closeness. Even if you decide not to breastfeed, you can still use feeding times as an opportunity to bond. When bottle feeding, hold your baby close to you and in a position where you can make eye contact. This is something father’s can do as well to bond with their child.
Sound
Mimicking the noises your baby makes and talking to your baby provides the child with a sense of security. You baby is able to recognize your voice. Reading and singing to your baby is also a way to provide emotional contact.
Sight
Babies can follow moving objects with their eyes. You baby will follow you around with their eyes and will early on try to imitate your expressions. Make eye contact with your baby to help build a strong bond.
